Spring clean your home with our Deep Clean Checklist

Cleaners London

Let the Spring winds sail through your home as you embark on a major reset and refresh for your home.  After the hibernation period, the longer days bring fresh energy to set a new standard in your home and get everything sparking for Spring.  If you can’t take on the whole project in one go, our room-by-room checklist allows you to go in bite-sized chunks.  Once you get into the groove you will be surprised where the new wave takes you. The great thing about the list is that you can approach it systematically, delegate tasks within it to other household members and get the satisfaction of ticking those unlikely chores off for this season.  Whether you want to refresh the home for your family or have potential viewings or short-term let fixtures, what you need is a list. Here we go!

Starting with the kitchen means you get the hearth of the home fired up for the next phase. Plus, there are many appliances in the kitchen that require a thorough deep clean, which can often be discarded in the realm of procrastination.  Now is the time to figure out how to clean the glass front of the oven, even if it requires locating its paperwork.  Go deep and be thorough. You can begin by losing all the excess and old food that lurks in the freezer, fridge, and storage units.

  • Clear away old food, old jars, and recycling.
  • Clean the oven from the inside, stove and extractor fan.
  • Clean the microwave.
  • Clean appliances, juicers, coffee makers, grinders, all of them.
  • Clean the dishwasher, top-up salt and rinse aid.
  • Defrost freezer, discard old forgotten food.
  • Clean the refridgerator.
  • Dust all side storage units, hoover inside drawers and under sideboards.
  • Degrease the kitchen drain.
  • Clean all sink drying units and trays.
  • Wipe walls, skirting boards and clean floors.
  • Wash all kitchen cloths and sponges on a high temperature.
  • Fix anything along the way you find is broken.
  • Give away any equipment you don’t need or have duplicates of.
  • Clean light switches.
  • Clean plug sockets.

Depending on the structure of your home, you can fit this list accordingly. If you have several bathrooms, tackle them all consecutively.

  • Scan your bathroom for old products which are out of date and ancient. Consign them to the bin and recycle where possible.
  • Thoroughly deep clean baths and showers including backsplashes and glass water guards.
  • Clean showerheads.
  • Clean the drains and the drain protectors.
  • Scrub tile grout.
  • Eliminate any mould on the bathroom seals with mould spray and brushing.
  • Wash or replace the shower curtain.
  • Clean toilet.
  • Clean toilet brush.
  • Clean floors and walls.
  • Clean skirting boards.
  • Clean cupboards inside and out.
  • Clean light switches.
  • Clean plug sockets.

Dining Room – Living Room

Take on the furniture first and then clean the shell of the room.  You may be inspired to have a seasonal switch-up of the furniture in the room, sometimes taking something out of a room can get new energy flowing.  Play around with the components of the rooms as you clean them one by one.

  • Polish and dust collectibles and ornaments.
  • Dust, vacuum, and polish furniture.
  • Address any stains and spots that have been lingering in upholstery and soft furnishings.
  • Clean lights and lamps.
  • Dust blinds.
  • Wipe clean walls.
  • Clean windows.
  • Wash or vacuum curtains.
  • Dust window sills.
  • Clean rugs and carpets.
  • Mop floors.
  • Clean skirting boards.
  • Clean remote controls.
  • Clean light switches .
  • Clean plug sockets

This is the time to sort through all your bed linens clothes and shoes and consign some to the charity shop. You may also take this chance to pack and store some items away for winter. Switch your winter duvets for the lighter variety and wash and store the heavier-duty bedding.

  • Get the laundry going to refresh your bedding and linens.
  • Vacuum your curtains or dust the blinds.
  • Dust all furniture, window sills, artwork and shelves.
  • Clean the windows.
  • Rotate your mattresses.
  • Clean floors, wash rugs.
  • Organise bedside tables and bedroom cabinets and furniture.
  • Clean lamps and light fixtures
  • Clean plug sockets
  • Clean Light switches

Laundry Room

In the laundry room can lurk many unfinished tasks and discarded items. Get this space shipshape for Spring by organizing your cleaning materials and products.

  • Clean the filter in the tumbledryer.
  • Clean the washing machine.
  • If it’s necessary run a refresh on the odor in the machine.  Baking soda and vinegar will do the trick.
  • Discard old cleaning materials.
  • Wash cleaning cloths and sponges on a high temperature.
  • Light switches and plug sockets.

If you have a garage a shed or a basement you may understandably leave this until last. Take some time once the rest of the house is in new gear and your vision has shifted to see what decluttering you can do in these spaces.  Here are a couple of guidelines.

  • Dispose of old paint and varnishes at your local recycling centre.
  • Consider what in this space could be recycled or repurposed.
  • Set up a storage system if you don’t already have one.
  • Fix broken tools and organize materials.
