Art and Literature in Oxford

If the festival scene does not float your boat and you want to explore the cultural treasury of Oxford, there is always plenty to do. There is still time to catch the last of the Pisarro exhibition at the Ashmolean in Oxford.  This collection of the “Father of Impressionism” will be running until the 12th June.  European dining on the roof side terrace will complete the atmosphere if you want the whole experience.  Amongst the rich array of Ashmolean artifacts this exhibition brings together home exhibits with paintings on international loan. Make sure you book in advance.

This renowned city of inspiration can always be explored through literary tours.  The Harry Potter tour, the Philip Pullman tour, and the C.S Lewis and Tolkien tour all offer a view of the city through the lives of its most famous narrators.  If you are searching for inspiration, or a good story, the city of the dreaming spires will be able to guide you.  For more information on literary tours in Oxford https://www.oxfordwalkingtours.com/literary-tour

Punting in Oxford

It may seem like a cliché but taking to the river and gliding along with some friends is the signature Oxford experience.  There are three main boat houses: one at Magdalen Bridge, one at Folly Bridge and one at the Cherwell Boat House.  Punting takes a bit of getting used to if you haven’t done it before, as it requires using a long pole to propel your boat along by pushing off from the riverbed and steering it at the same time.  Learning this art on a summer’s day with the risk of falling in is a guaranteed laugh.  If you are unsure of your abilities, you can hire a ‘chauffeur’. With a picnic and some Pimms and a group of chums, you will be deep in the authentic Oxford experience. A popular thing to do if you leave from the Cherwell Boat House is to punt up the river and moor your punt at the Victoria Arms pub to enjoy a drink in its back garden, which backs onto the river.
