1-Christmas Market in Bath

The Bath Christmas Market attracts thousands of people from all over the world.  The Georgian streets with 200 fairytale chalets make for a Christmas backdrop that delights all sensibilities. With a stunning light display on Bath’s iconic buildings, this outdoor market is guaranteed to ignite your Christmas cheer. Artisan crafts, jewellry, and homeware make great gifts, plus there will of course be cheese and local foods to furnish your Christmas table. Mulled wine and cider will soften the winter edges and flood the streets with aromas in a sensory feast. Christmas Carts on Green Street will also showcase the new emerging artisans and tradespeople, with a quick turnover, so there will be new additions every few days.  From Thursday 23rd November to Sunday 10th December

2-Bath on Ice

Take the plunge from autumn into winter in the wonderland that is Bath on Ice. Skating, drinking, and eating in the Moguls Alpine Bar at Royal Victoria Park. Festive cocktails, mulled wine, and draught beer, plus luxury hot chocolate will keep you toasty in this icy pleasure ground. A lot of family fun to be had, particularly with the seasonal glow golf.  A nocturnal take on the classic game with glow-in-the-dark balls.  Royal Victoria Park can be reached by walking or bus. Buses stop at Bath on Ice during the Christmas market, making it the next destination on the winter world trail.

3-Westonbirt Arboretum

Enchanted Christmas at the Arboretum takes illuminations to the next level. Sound and light play in nature’s majesty to create an enchanting trail. Installations blend with the nature trail to suspend belief and stimulate the imagination. A certain escape from the living room and the domestic side of Christmas.  Relaxed sessions on 25th November and the 2nd of December are adapted to lessen over-stimulating effects for people with additional needs.  There is a Christmas Village to make sure you pick up some festive food, drink and have a spin on a few funfair rides.

4-Wookey Hole Winter Wonderland

If you are on the hunt for Santa this Christmas, the North Pole Grotto at Wookey Hole will not disappoint. 100,000 lights transform the Wookey Hole Caves into pure underground enchantment. Whatever the age, this is going to be an illuminating adventure. Once you reach the grotto, Santa and his Elves will be there, laden with gifts. In the Wookey Hole Theatre will be a circus show, exploring the tale of the Grinch.  With the Christmas film in the 4D cinema, this is a day out in the Christmas calendar beyond compare, and worth the journey from Bath.

5-Wreath making at Dyrham

For a historical Christmas weekend walk, there is a lot on offer at Dyrham in 2023. The house will be decorated with decorations from five different eras, with wreaths and trees spread wide and far evoking different historical ambiances.  Giant wooden presents make up an outdoor discovery trail all throughout the acres of land there.  Carol singers will be singing on occasion at nearby St Peter’s Church. Where else to make a wreath but in this classic setting away from all the buzz of the high streets. On the 4th and the 6th of December, you can book a ticket to make a wreath from the surrounding leaves and berries.  With plenty of time to get it up on your door while advent advances.

6-Prior Park Advent Trail

The National Trusts Prior Park will have the popular advent trail again in the gardens. School holidays and weekends are the best days to explore the calendar hidden in various logs around the garden. With the Palladian Bridge dressed in Christmas finery, there will be many opportunities for festive photos and perhaps a marriage proposal, and of course food and drink in the Tea Shed. This classic Bath backdrop is a perfect place for winter walks and a bit of breathing space from the buzzing city centre.

7-Avebury at Christmas

This year in Avebury Manor, beautifully hand-crafted ornaments will decorate the Manor.  This year’s theme will be the 12 Days of Christmas.  A carefully curated walk through the 12 Days will reveal these symbolic images all carefully crafted out of recycled materials by volunteers.  A visual feast lovingly wrought explores this timeless theme of the advent passage.  With great gift options at the National Trust and the Henge Shop as well as the Elements jewellry store, you can kill all your birds with one stone-  If you pardon the pun.  A beautiful day out in Wiltshire for the family, with wreath-making workshops and winter walks with archaeologists, drinking in the megalithic magic of the Winter Solstice.  Christmas markets with carol singing and music add to the seasonal charm of this special place.

8-Christmas gifts in Bath

Visit Bath has a whole arcade of gift ideas around Bath, including vouchers and special offers. Including special excursions and experiences that are designed to provide visitors and residents with memories to keep.  The Christmas market has a plethora of gift options and with so many niche crafts and artisan work to consider you can sidestep the Christmas trap of buying meaningless merchandise for people.  Bath is known for its independent makers, sellers, and boutiques. To browse some of the Bath shopping areas, look here. If you want to eat out in Bath on Christmas Day, the gods are smiling on you, because there are options! There is something quintessentially classic about Christmas in Bath, that is why so many people choose to travel here during December.  For locals, Bath Christmas Farmers Market is a must for festive food. Orders can be made before the last market on the 23rd of December and picked up on the day.  There is nothing quite like a local farmers’ market at Christmas to feel the timeless sense of this winter festival.
